QUALITY
ORDNANCE FACTORY
Certification Agency: BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS
NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BOARD FOR TESTING & CALIBRATION OF LABORATORIES
QUALITY POLICY
“OFC is committed to produce the product to the entire satisfaction of customers and ensure continual improvement of Quality Management System”
QUALITY SYSTEM
A centralized road map for total quality management system have been designed by ordnance factory board as a guide line. The system maintained at a factory level will be audited by external and internal agencies.
The main features of the TQM will cover as follows :
v Quality of design
v Quality of conformance to design
v Standard cell functions
v Quality of purchase
v Quality of input material receipt.
v Quality of input material inspection
v Quality of storage of input materials
v Quality of product manufacturing process.
Three tier Quality Audit System
Three tier Quality Audit System has been introduced to achieve the quality system designed by OFB. These are :
- 1st tier audit is conducted by factory once in a month.
- 2nd tier audit is conducted by sister factory auditors on half yearly basis.
- 3rd tier audit is conducted by the auditor nominated by OFB annually.
Self-certification
To control the non-conformities and the process improvement, producer in the shop level has been made responsible for quality. In line operator inspects its products and certifies in prescribed format.
Key testing facilities
Computerized universal testing m/c (INSTRON, UK make) dynamic model 500 kn capacity. With the above machine 0.2% proof stress, yield stress, UTS, elongation % age, reduction of area % age & fracture toughness test in unit of KIC (with cyclic load of 104 – 108 cycle per Hour) is measured and hardcopy can also be obtained.
Chemical lab :
Computerized determination of carbon & sulpher %age by carbon sulpher analyzer (model CS 200, LECO make, USA)
With above facility carbon sulpher %age can be determined within 60 seconds with a accuracy to four decimal place.
Metallurgical testing :
Ø Computerized Olympus metallurgical microscope alongwith image analysis system (Olympus, Japan) with high resolution colour camera.
Ø Magnification 50x to 1000x. Measuring accuracy 1 micron.
Microcam image analysis system can measure grain size, inclusion rating, case depth, depth of de-carborization, nodularity, carbide particle, micro structure.
Cost control measures
OFC is continuously aiming for cost control by :
- Modification of the input material to reduce the wastages.
- Reduction in labour and material estimates through process improvement.
- Controlling the non conformaties.
- Modificaiton in the shop layout for minimum material handling
MODERNISATION
Modernization has been undertaken to upgrade technological capability, better flexibility of production, shorter duration for establishment of new products and to meet the stringent quality requirements.
